Aging of the face is primarily caused by an imbalance in the skin's antioxidant and free radical content according to dermatologists. There are many contributing factors.
But the experts say lower antioxidant levels combined with higher concentrations of free radicals is primarily to blame.
Dermatologists have found that older skin contains fewer antioxidants like glutathione, coenzyme Q10 and superoxide dismutase. More free radicals are present, probably due to the lower antioxidant levels.
Antioxidants work to neutralize free radical molecules. If not neutralized on a regular basis, free radicals can damage cellular membranes, DNA strands and even collagen fibers.
We have known for years that one antioxidant is essential for the formation of strong collagen fibers. That antioxidant is vitamin C. A lack of vitamin C in the diet results in the formation of weak collagen. The skin is damaged more easily and starts to sag.
Vitamin C creams can be used directly on the skin, but they are likely to cause adverse reactions. The nutrient is a mild acid.
It can cause burning, redness, itching and irritation. So be sure to get enough vitamin C in your diet. Look for anti aging face creams that contain a different antioxidant.
Numerous antioxidants have been tried over the years. Vitamin A can be effective, but it can also cause adverse reactions.
Research indicates that the best forms of vitamin A are those naturally present in avocado and Shea butter. Those two ingredients help to make a good nighttime moisturizer.
Vitamin E has long been recommended for protecting the skin's health and appearance. It can help to prevent age spots and possibly skin cancer. But most of the vitamin E on the market is now the synthetic type. The synthetics may not be as effective.
To reverse aging of the face, the most effective antioxidant identified to date is coenzyme Q10. Researchers had to reduce the size of the coenzyme Q10 particles in order to allow the antioxidant to penetrate through all of the skin's layers. Once that obstacle was conquered, they found that creams containing the nutrient could reverse sun damage and wrinkles substantially after only a few months of use.
Another nourishing compound has been shown to increase the skin's glutathione and superoxide dismutase content.
This will help to reverse age spots and correct the imbalance mentioned earlier in this article. Look for an anti aging face cream containing Functional Keratin. One of the best contains that ingredient and coenzyme Q10.
Combined, the two ingredients should effectively correct the antioxidant/free radical imbalance blamed for the vast majority of the visible signs of aging. Wrinkles, sagging, age spots, uneven pigmentation, etc. All of those things are probably related to free radical damage.
You can go a step further if you want and take a good anti-aging multi-nutritional formula. While there are a number of good ones on the market, the best seems to be a combination of fish oil, astaxanthin, coenzyme Q10 and lycopene.
Is aging of the face completely avoidable? Probably not, but we can certainly keep the visible signs to a minimum with the right approach.
